Recent headlines about the British shipyard industry have been mixed, with BAE Systems ceasing construction at its Portsmouth facilities in favour of repair and maintenance, and Ferguson Shipbuilders in Glasgow entering administration (although it was later saved from closure by Clyde Blowers Capital and has since earned an order for a ￡12M third hybrid ferry for local operator, CalMac). Young people could be forgiven for thinking that the future of the sector was uncertain, but one Scottish yard is determined to help new blood further the industry. Part of Dales Marine, Garvel Clyde in Greenock runs a successful apprenticeship scheme and was one of the yards that stepped in to offer Ferguson's apprentices places when it looked as if they would be made redundant.
