Owners troubled by EU's no-beaching ship recycling plan

Many shipowners are worried that the EU Ship Recycling Regulation will create a two-tier market at the end of ships' life. The intent of the directive will be to ban recycling by beaching, which tends to happen in the main recycling yards in south east Asia, but it would only apply to EU-flagged ships. The rules entered into force last December and are based on IMO's as-yet unratified Hong Kong Convention and the UN's Basel Convention regarding hazardous waste disposal. Currently the EU is compiling a list of approved yards which it expects to publish by the end of 2016.
