The merger of classification society giants DNV and GL a year ago has seen casualties - both in terms of staff and clients. The latter is of interest as market opinion views the venture as a soft takeover by DNV, an assumption supported by the fact that DNV owns 63.5% of the joint company and has 11 board members as compared to GL, which had just three (GL's owner Mayfair Vermoegensverwaltung owns 36.5% of DNV GL). Accordingly, some societies have targeted the lucrative German market, which was traditionally a GL stronghold (DNV's Norwegian assets appear to be unscathed).
