How often do you hear complaints to the effect that "the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing"? All too often, it is observed, we operate in 'silos' unaware of what other people in the maritime world are doing or even thinking. Aboard ship we may have been brought up to think that 'oil and water don't mix', but the ship ran so much better when deck and engine departments worked in harmony! 'The shore side doesn't have a clue about what goes on aboard ship' is a traditional complaint of those afloat (which of course is reciprocated), but what efficiencies can arise when ship and shore do work productively together?
