Electric propulsion is on the rise, currently accounting for 2% of the world fleet and 11% of the total orderbookas of 2014. According to Clarksons Research, the number of vessels with electric propulsion has been growing 12%per year over the past decade - said to be three times faster than the world's fleet. "Market cycles demand flexibility in ships. Operators are looking for machinery that is able to respond to volatile and dynamic market conditions, and I believe electric propulsion is able to do this best," explains Heikki Sojjama, global head of ABB marine and ports business, adding that reliability and safety and redundancy are easier to achieve with this type of propulsion.
