Arbitration is a useful tool for resolving disputes between two or more parties, for example a charterer and vessel operator, without having to resort to lengthy (and expensive) legal proceedings. Switzerland's Alternative Dispute Resolution for Com-modity Trading, Shipping and Trade Finance (ACT) has an edge when it comes to efficient dispute resolution as it reveals areas of potential weakness in the London offering. There are broadly two types of London arbitration. The first is the broad-based international style arbitration dealing with general commercial disputes underthe LCIA or perhaps the ICC Arbitration Rules. The second is the classic trade arbitration which proceeds under the auspices of a trade association, such as 'Gafta' for grain, rice and feedstuff disputes.
