The past few yea rs have seen a the shift from traditional fuel methods to battery operation for short sea shipping. DNV GL is taking this a step further with its 'ReVolt' concept project -which is for an unmanned, battery-operated coastal ship that will boast a 100nm operating range on a single charge. The ballast-free vessel has an average speed of 6kts thereby enabling it to be fitted with an inclined keel and straight vertical bow that reduces water resistance along the ship's entire profile. The slow speed also means that cavitation will be negligible, which is why its Azimuth thrusters will be fitted with 2-blade propellers. These are are expected to offer 76% propulsion efficiency.
