ICS pledges commitment to CO2 reductions

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), acting as the voice of theglobal shipping industry, has declared full support forafuture global deal on climate change atthe United Nations Conference in Paris. In a statement issued in the run-up to the COP21 talks in Paris, the industry body said that the sector accepts its responsibility to contribute to the CO_2 reduction measures being taken by the global community. But it emphasised that this contribution should be proportionate to the industry's share of the world'stotal CO_2 emissions, which IMO has determined to be around 2.2%. Transport in all forms-including land, air and sea - accounts for almost one-quarter of the world's energy-related CO_2 emissions. The sector is still 96% dependent on fossil fuels and accounts for 60% of global oil use.
