Big Data already allows us to find problems at a 'systems of systems' level. Before large scale analytics, we did analysis at a single systems level, for example an individual engine. This was sufficient for a ship that wasn't highly integrated. With the advent of modern (war)ships, we find that complexity has grown considerably. Now a problem apparent on an individual engine might be caused by something else far removed from the engine system. The only way to tackle this is large scale data analytics and for us that really means the correlation of analysis across many systems. A great example was showing how the optimum fuel efficient speed of a vessel was far removed from what the design said it was. This worked revolved around analysing several systems and other factors, which if looked at individually, would have been extremely difficult to determine their effect on speed.
