New radar to boost Somali coast guard effort

The Taiwanese government representative office in Brussels is donating financial resources to the US-based NGO Oceans Beyond Piracy to assist the European Union (EU) establish the first Somali coastal radarsurveillance network to help secure the Indian Ocean waters off the coast of the African country. Once established, the Maritime Communications Initiative (MCI) will be used to monitor vessel movements and coordinate the security operations of the local coast guard and the EU-led international navies involved in the counter-piracy operations in the Gulf Aden and around the Indian Ocean.
