Redline Communications is offering shipping and related maritime businesses that mostly operate in littoral waters a chance to bypass satcoms altogether with a new point-to-point terrestrial communications system that works over extended distances. Think long-range WiFi for ships. The Toronto-based company's RAS-Extend Marine solution, launched in April, was designed initially to provide communications between offshore oil drilling platforms and the numerous ships that service those platforms, but it has recently found a coast guard customer and could find a home in other maritime applications.
