“No doubt whatsoever” HAD are genotoxic, says official defending aloe vera restrictions

A top European Commission official has defended plans to ban hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HAD) on safety grounds despite the impact the move would have on supplements and foods containing aloe vera. Sabine Julicher, Director of Food and Feed Safety and Innovation in the Commission’s health and food safety directorate general (DG SANTE), told the European Parliament’s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee on 14 January that there is “no doubt whatsoever on the genotoxicity of these substances.”
