At the beginning of 2020, Poland witnessed a spate of avian influenza outbreaks in what would mark an ongoing problem for Europe across the rest of the year. Poland is the EU’s biggest poultry producer. The country had been free of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) since 2017, but between late December 2019 and the first weeks of January 2020, seven outbreaks of HPAI were detected. Thousands of birds were culled and poultry imports were banned by South Africa, South Korea and Singapore, among other territories.
