Novel, biodegradable fibers that release antimicrobial compounds when triggered by bacterial enzymes or critical increases in relative humidity might lead to food producers' holy grail of environmentally friendly packaging materials that extend product shelf life and diminish the risks of food poisoning by combatting the likes of fungi, E. coli, and Listeria.
