The EU has set maximum limits for opium alkaloids in poppy seeds and products containing them that are to apply from 1 July 2022, under a new European Commission regulation. While poppy seeds, used in bakery products such as bread rolls, cakes or muffins, or sold to consumers for use in a range of dishes, are a source of healthy fatty oils, they are obtained from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.), which brings a risk of contamination with opium alkaloids such as morphine and codeine.
