China’s seaborne coal arrivals dropped 9% on the month in April, to 20.6 mt, according to IHS Markit Commodities at Sea, but were still up 21% on the year from 17.0 mt. The April volume was near par with the average for China’s seaborne coal arrivals in 2019, which was 20.1 mt per month. Seaborne tonnage accounts for roughly 80% of China’s total imports, with the remainder coming via land from Mongolia and Russia.
