The livestock sector’s animal welfare and environmental issues continued to spark debate among policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic last week. European Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski pledged his support for an EU-wide petition to phase out the use of cages in farming, a strong indication of what will be in future proposals to revise the bloc’s animal welfare legislation. Currently, only five EU member states out have national legislation regulating cages in farming, namely Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden.
