In Q2, pig iron export from Russia to China was at its lowest over the past 5 quarters (just 0.18 million t), while Ukraine shipped no material at all this year. In the meantime, regular customers stepped up purchases in H1 as aggregate shipments from Russia and Ukraine increased by 10% y-o-y to 1.88 million t to US and by 76% y-o-y to 0.47 million t to Italy. Export duty imposed in Russia will restrain pig iron shipments from the country, forcing major producers to slash output during the rest of the year. Ukrainian exporters are likely to take advantage of the situation to maintain exports at high levels. However, aggregate shipments from the two countries will decrease this year.
