Disclosing the errors of other physicians.

I agree with most of die proposals of the authors of "Emergency Physicians and Disclosure of Medical Errors." We part company, however, when it comes to disclosing the errors of physicians who previously cared for the patient. Surely as emergency physicians the authors have many times been the victims of practitioners who criticize the diagnosis and treatment rendered in the emergency department without appreciating that the patient presentation and other circumstances were very different at that time. Similarly, emergency physicians should be very wary of judging that physicians who previously saw the patient were in error, much less saying so to the patient. It is especially scary that the authors propose this be done to assist the patient in deciding whether to return to that physician or "seek redress."
