Atlantic thermal coal prices continued to rally in the week ended May 28, hitting fresh multi-year highs on a combination of supply tightness and high freight rates, while physical demand was still heard lacking. In Europe, Platts CIF ARA 6,000 kcal/kg NAR physical price was assessed at $94.50/mt on May 28, up $2.25 on the day, $5.75 on the week and the highest price since November 2018. Sources said the price rise was likely due to concerns over supply tightness in South Africa and Colombia, stronger margins for coal-fired generation in Europe and a continually strong freight environment.
