We've all heard the story of value in health care in lots of other domains, and we applaud the WESTRN consortium for bridging emergency and trauma care into the dialogue. The country has wrestled over whether to use prostate serum antigen to screen for prostate cancer,2 mammography to screen for breast cancer,3 and the idea of rationing health care resources at the end of life.4 In all cases, there axe philosophical and ideological criticisms to be sure, but there are also methodological concerns that underlie each of the research endeavors behind the prostate, breast, or end-of-life care policy dialogues. The punchline, then, is an overused one but very pertinent as we dissect the study of the WESTRN group-the devil is in the details.
