AngloGold Ashanti suspends production guidance at Obuasi mine in Ghana

AngloGold Ashanti – the world’s third-largest gold mining company – said it suspended its 2021 production and cost guidance for its Obuasi gold mine in Ghana, after a collapse May 18 that led to a suspension of operations at the mine. “Early indications are that this geotechnical incident was likely caused by the failure of a horizontal, or sill pillar, in one of the mine’s smaller mining stopes. A thorough investigation into the event has been initiated,” the company said in a statement May 26. It said it will undertake an “in-depth area-by-area assessment of the mine design, mine schedule and ground management plans, before progressively releasing mining areas for a phased resumption in production.”
