Exxon to Close Australia Refinery

Exxon Mobil has decided to close its Altona refinery in Australia and turn it into an import terminal as the country’s refiners face fierce competition from bigger, more efficient plants in other countries. BP announced a similar move last year and Australia’s two other remaining refineries may also close in the near future, despite an offer of financial support for domestic refineries from the federal government (IOD Dec.14’20). The country’s old and relatively small refineries had already been finding it difficult to compete, and the slump in demand for fuel caused by the Covid-19 pandemic only made their problems worse.
