FERC Ready to Facilitate State-Led Carbon Pricing

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission(FERC) has approved a policy statement making clear that it will help facilitate any state-level proposals for carbon pricing in wholesale power markets,which had been urged by some major gas industry players.The policy statement,drafted last October,adds that any proposals for carbon pricing in wholesale power markets can fall within FERC's jurisdiction depending on the specific facts and circumstances.The statement was approved by a 3-2 margin at FERC's monthly meeting Thursday.The supporting votes included Chairman Richard Glick and Commissioner Allison Clements,both Democrats,and Republican Commission Neil Chatterjee,who had spearheaded the discussion on carbon pricing when he served as chairman last year.FERC is currently under a 3-2 Republican majority.
