The International Energy Agency(IEA) has made a dramatic new move in the energy transition debate,with a declaration that no new investments in oil and gas fields are needed after this year if the world wants to hit net-zero emissions by 2050.The most striking conclusion of the landmark net-zero emissions by 2050 report was that-if that objective is to be met-only oil and gas fields currently under development need further funding,due to a significant forecast decline in demand.Exploration and future project sanctions could be scrapped.For gas in particular,no new fields are necessary under the net-zero scenario,although investments in fields approved for development are needed.However,many LNG facilities currently under construction or in the planning stage are not needed.
