Wind Additions Hit Record

The US installed more wind turbine capacity in 2020 than any other year as renewables continue to encroach on gas'share of power generation. A total of 14.2 gigawatts was added in 2020,surpassing the previous record of 13.2 GW added in 2012,the US Energy Information Administration(EIA)said. The phaseout of the full value of the federal production tax credit at the end of 2020 was credited for the record level of investment. The US now has a total wind turbine capacity of 118 GW,the EIA said,with 8.4% of utility-scale electricity generation coming from wind. Many of the turbines added in late 2020 will contribute to increases in wind-powered electricity generation in 2021,when the EIA expects wind's share of the mix to rise to 10%.
