EU's chief scientist says evidence supports safety of biotech crops

Anne Glover, the European Commission's chief scientific advisor, has waded into the ongoing controversy about the safety of biotech foods by telling a conference, in Parma, Italy, that the evidence is sound, EU Food Law reports. Speaking on Nov. 7 at the opening session of a two-day conference on "Challenging boundaries in risk assessment sharing experiences," hosted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Glover pointed to the voting record of various EU member-states on biotech approvals. She noted that Sweden had a 100% record of voting for approval, while Austria and Greece clocked up a 100% score in voting against.
