Total becomes France’s biogas leader after acquiring compatriot Fonroche Biogaz

Total has become France’s market leader in the biogas space after the firm announced on Monday that it had acquired country’s leading biomethane producer Fonroche Biogaz for an undisclosed sum. The French major said the acquisition forms the “cornerstone” of its strategy to produce 4-6 TWh of biomethane a year by the end of the decade. The deal sees the French energy major acquire seven operational anaerobic digestion units – which convert organic matter such animal and food waste into biogas and biofertiliser – with an installed capacity of 500 GWh in its home market. Fonroche’s installed capacity doubled between 2019-2020, giving the firm 10% of the French market and making the firm France’s market leader in the renewable gas sector.
