Global steel output rises by nearly 5pc

Global steel production increased by 4.8pc year on year to 163mn t in January, supported by a strong increase from China and India. Meanwhile, EU and North American output remained sluggish, registering declines, Worldsteel data show. In January, the Covid-19 pandemic continued to afect production among major producers. Chinese steel output grew strongly, despite a resurgence in infections in the northeast, where much of the country’s iron and steel industry is con- centrated, resulting in some temporary lockdowns. China’s steel sector purchasing managers’ index also increased, by 5.9 points on the previous month to 51.5 in January, rising above 50 to indicate an improvement in sentiment, as demand rose.
