Tight supply may push China silicon prices higher

Chinese silicon metal prices are expected to move higher in the short term in light of tight spot availability, market partici- pants said. Argus last assessed domestic prices for 5-5-3 grade metal at 17,800-18,000 yuan/t ($2,747-2,778/t) delivered to ports on 17 August, the highest level since November 2006 and up by Yn1,800/t from 12 August, driven by higher production costs, tight supplies and stronger consumer demand. Export prices for 5-5-3 grade metal increased to $2,740-2,770/t fob from $2,470-2,500/t fob over the same period.
