Tight supply, quarantine curb China coal imports

China’s August coal imports fell compared with July and June following tighter seaborne coal supplies and the country’s Co- vid-19 quarantine measures. This added to coal shortages for Chinese power utilities. August imports — including anthracite, coking coal and thermal coal — reached 28.05mn t, preliminary customs data show. This was down by 7pc from July’s intake, which was a seven-month high because of frm summer utility demand. But August deliveries were still up by 36pc from a year earlier when Chinese importers had to cut imports because of annual import quotas that were running low for many provinces.
