India’s Growth Brings Challenges, Opportunities

India could account for nearly a quarter of all growth in global energy demand over the next two decades, driven by a rising population, an expanding economy and urbanization, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). But this will create major challenges in the form of costly energy imports as well as increases in air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, the Paris-based agency said in its first detailed report on India in five years. The IEA’s Executive Director Fatih Birol said “government policies to accelerate India’s clean energy transition [could] lay the foundation for lasting prosperity and greater energy security,” with potential benefits for the entire world.
