MOTORSPORT GREATS: OSTERREICHRING

The Red Bull Ring, which will host F1's next two races, is very popular, but it's not a patch on the Osterreichring from which it was derived. The old circuit went straight on at the top of the hill where the modern Turn 1 bends right, and even the later addition of a chicane didn't sanitise one of its fastest, most flowing sections. It rejoined the current track where Turn 3 is now and flowed down to the 180deg Bosch Kurve, which was faster and more demanding than today's Turn 4. It first hosted the Austrian GP in 1970.
