Much like that equally British institution, Her Majesty the Queen, Mini is celebrating two birthdays this year. First, it's 60 years since pioneering Formula 1 legend John Cooper first gave his name to go-faster versions of the 1959 supermini. Second, and more importantly, it's two decades since BMW launched its 21st-century reinvention of Sir Alec Issigonis's icon. Much ink was spent at the time pondering whether this Anglo-German creation could ever be a true Mini, but the reality is that it sparked a huge success story - one that went from a single model to a globally recognised brand with crossovers, estates, plug-in hybrids and electric cars on its books.
