In 2021, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of a fascinating hormone, insulin, that remains one of the most important achievements in medicine. Indeed, the discovery of insulin by Banting and colleagues has saved the lives of millions of people suffering from type 1 diabetes worldwide. It was also a major scientific breakthrough that has helped us better understand the complex physiology behind the endocrine regulation of nutrient metabolism and the functions of several other organs and complex cellular processes.
