Belgium hydrogen coalition sees import potential for fuel: study

London—A study conducted by a coalition of industrial partners, including Belgian natural gas network Fluxys and French utility Engie, has concluded that hydrogen imports into Belgium would be both technically and economically feasible. A joint statement from the partners said that the study, published Jan. 27, “laid the basis for concrete next steps” for pilot projects for green molecule supply from areas of renewable energy abundance. The feasibility study, it said, was the “first tangible result of collaboration” between the partners, which include DEME, Exmar, WaterstofNet, and the port authorities of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. Belgium’s climate objective is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050, compared with 2005 levels, a target described as a “major challenge” by the coalition.
