In this report, an analysis of the high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) 2.1 mated connector electrical performance impacts on the signal integrity of the high-speed digital system is presented. There are various electrical performance specifications for the HDMI 2.1 mated connectors such as contact boundary impedance, insertion loss, and attenuation to cross-talk ratio. The connector specifications are defined for the mated condition therefore, most of the connector companies develop mated plug-receptacle connectors together. However, in the real market, HDMI 2.1 plugs and receptacles from different developers can be mated. In this analysis, mated connector sets that fail to meet the standard specification are chosen by cross-mating the plug and receptacle from the certified mated connector sets. Using the chosen mated connectors and raw-cable model, connector and cable assembly (CCA) models are generated. With the generated CCA models, a standard end-to-end eye-diagram simulation including transmitters, receivers, equalizers, transition minimized differential signaling (TMDS) bit patterns, and cross-talk is conducted. By deriving the eye-diagram of the CCA, the impacts of the cross-mated connector on the signal integrity of the digital system are analyzed.
