摘要

In late 2018, the CDC reported a series of infections in patients who had surgery at Grand View Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. Investigation revealed poor infection control and instrument sterilization practices, but the outbreak seemed to terminate by April of 2019. Now, the CDC reports eight instances of infection with extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Pseudomonas aerugi-nosa in patients following surgery (e.g., bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, cholecys-tectomy) in Tijuana and Jalisco, Mexico. Resistance arose due to expression of a car-bapenemase known as the Verona inte-gron-encoded metallo-(3-lactamase. Organisms expressing this enzyme are often resistant to all first-line antimicrobials, making treatment extremely difficult.
