Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Across the Placenta

A case report provides evidence for transplacental mother-to-child transmission of SARS-CoV-2 resulting in symptomatic neonatal infection. Neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection has been reported in the setting of maternal COVID-19, but whether the virus was transmitted across the placenta, during the birth process, or after birth remains unclear. In this case study, investigators in France present the strongest evidence to date for transplacental SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
