C. Everett Koop was one of the most famous and beloved U.S. Surgeon Generals in history, but it was not always like that. Although a brilliant pediatric surgeon, he was nominated by President Ronald Reagan partly because he was considered to be a conservative opponent of abortion with a strong Evangelical Christian background. His appointment was opposed by liberal groups, and his confirmation won senate approval with only 60 votes.
