摘要

Biofumigation is cultural agronomic practice of using volatile chemicals released from decomposing plant tissues to suppress soil pathogens including, fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, insects and germinating weed seeds (Brown and Morra 1997). Brassicas are mainly used for biofumigation. Plants have different profiles of isothiocyanates and stressing the plants increases the amount of isothiocyanates (ITCs) produced by plants (Gouws 2004). Biofumigation holds a lot of potential in India because brassicas are widely grown and consumed. There are over 120 ITCs that have been identified mainly from the plants of Brassicaceae family. The biocidal activity of various isothiocyanates ITCs released by brassica tissues is well-known and the potential ofbrassicas to suppress a number of soil-borne pests and diseases is supported by considerable empirical field evidence (Matthiessen and Kirkegaardl998).
