Rapid Testing of Hybrid Rice Seed Purity - Under Indian Conditions

Seed purity of parental lines and hybrids is vital for success of hybrid rice seed production and hybrid rice production programmes. The yield of hybrid rice decreases by 80-100 kg ha~(-1) for every 1% decrease in purity of hybrid seeds (Wang Guiyuanand Tan Zhijun, 1993). The sale of seed from hybrid crop (F_2 seeds), mixtures and seed of conventional varieties in the name of hybrids by private agencies puts the farmers to great loss under Indian conditions. Hybrid seed may get contaminated by seedof parental lines or other hybrids or conventional varieties. Male sterile line seed gets contaminated by seed of fertile (B and R) lines.
