Executive summary: NHLBI workshop on the primary prevention of chronic lung diseases

Lung function is essential for good health,and compromises in this capacity havea large and broad effect on the ability tolead a full and satisfying life. Given theimpact that diseases of the lung have onoverall health, the National Institutes ofHealth (NIH) support a substantialportfolio of research to define mechanismsof lung diseases, and to translatediscoveries into effective patient care. Thisapproach has led to revolutionary advancesin the management of lung diseases, butnearly all strategies aim to treat diseases thatare fully established in symptomaticpatients.
