Evaluation of Onion Varieties for Storability in Different Methods of Storage

The storage quality of bulbs of ten onion varieties/lines viz., Pusa Red, Pusa Madhvi, B-!ine, Sel. 383, Sel. 402, N-53, Sel. 126, Early Grano, Pusa White Flat and Pusa White Round was evaluated in open mesh hessian cloth bag, nylon net bag and plastic crates in a well ventilated room at room temperature for four months (June-October). Results indicated that rotting losses were steadily increased from 1MAS (months after storage) to 2MAS and there after it declined drastically in both nylon net bag and hessian cloth bag, whereas in plastic crates maximum rotting losses were observed in 1MAS. In all these storage methods sprouting losses and physiological loss in weight were very high during fourth month. No sprouting was observed in any of the varieties upto 2MAS and sprouting was recorded only after 3MAS of storage. Nylon net bag was the best storage method with minimum total loss in weight followed by plastic crates and hessian cloth bag. Varieties like Sel. 383, Pusa Madhvi and Pusa Red were thebest regarding their storage abilities.
