Rice occupies a pivotal position in the food security system of India, contributing about 62 percent total food gain production and at the current level of population growth rate, rice production has to be enhanced to 125 m.t. by 2020 from the presentlevel of 90 m.t. Achieving this target is a major challenge. Though India is ranked as the second largest producer of rice in the global scenario, productivity wise, it is positioned at a ridiculously lower rank of 55 among the 111 countries producing rice, with a productivity of 2.1 t ha~(-1) . Andhra Pradesh rank fifth in area (3501 lakh ha) and third in production (8510 lakh tones). In Srikakulam district of High Attitude and Tribal Zone, the productivity is low (1.91 ha~(-1) ) compared to the national average due to non-adoption of improved agro techniques. Modern genotypes of rice having high yield potential can be realized provided some vital agro techniques are followed, among them nitrogen management is the kingpin. Application of nitrogen @ 90 kg ha~(-1) recorded the highest yields in the district with the variety RGL-2539. Since, the tribal farmers are very poor and can't afford such high doses of fertilizers, there is an every need to find out the performance of this variety at lower levels of fertilization. In addition organic manures are very cheap sources of plant nutrients, available in plenty but are not utilized properly by the tribal farmers due to lack of awareness. Hence, it is proposed to study the performance of rice when FYMor green leaf manure was applied in combination with nitrogen at lower levels.
