One of the best of our native azaleas is the Florida azalea, R. austrinum. It is a Gulf Coastal Plains species, found in the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, southeastern Mississippi, and southwestern Georgia, primarily along waterways. There areno R. austrinum in eastern Florida or in middle or western Mississippi. To the east, distribution stops a little past Tallahassee. In Mississippi, the plants seem to go no farther than some western creeks of the Pascagoula River.
