In a previous article, I discussed a design for an Electronic Lead Screw (ELS) which was intended for a Wabeco D9000 lathe. In the stock version of this lathe, threading is achieved by changing pulleys and belts that provide both imperial and metric threads. The pitch of the available threads spans a range of .4-7 mm pitch and 10-40 threads per inch. Changing pulleys and belts is a somewhat tedious operation, requiring the replacement of pulleys in specific locations, as well as careful adjustment of pulley tensions. When returning to turning feeds after a threading operation, the process must be reversed.
