John Killian's article, "A Tale of Two Theories," in the winter 2019 issue spurred me to write. The electron flow theory may sound appealing on the surface, but it opens up a huge Pandora's box and it misses two very important facts. The first is that electrons have negative charge. So when they are going south, the charge (thus the current) is going north. The other is that electrons are only one of many kinds of charged particles that carry current, some negative, some positive. While electrons are the predominant kind in metallic conductors, there are many other cases where positive carriers are moving north, or particles of both polarities are moving, either in the same direction (thus partially canceling each other) or opposite (thus adding to each other's current). Batteries, plating tanks, plasma cutters, arc welders, and semiconductors are examples.
