A Stepper Motor Version of a Rotary Table - PART ONE

Just so we're clear about what kind of rotary table is being talked about here, see Photo 1. This unit is sold by various suppliers under various part numbers, but all seem to come from the same casting molds. Although a unit of modest quality, this is what many hobbyists can afford, me included. When using the indexing plates to make gears, total concentration is required. You have to count handle turns and move the sector arms for each tooth. When you don't count turns correctly the result is as shown in Photo 2. One fat tooth is the result of an error counting turns and the second fat tooth is where the gear cutting finished. I made this error as a student a few years ago and have since had a dislike for indexing plates on rotary tables.
