To assess and evaluate the impact on pig farms of current changes in German fertiliser ordinance and environmental legislation, an on-farm study was carried out. The individual nutrient cycles on farms were recorded, evaluated and findings for a more sustainable system approach in the whole-farm consulting were derived. At the start of the project in the business year 2017/2018 the 21 farms had an average of about 80 ha of utilised agricultural area, 185 productive breeding sows and 1,377 fattening pigs as average annual stock. The largest nitrogen (N) input of the farms was the purchase of feed with an average of 57% of the total N input. The average N balance (kg/ha) during the course of the project decreased from 129 via 122 to 103 in the last project year.
